What is a Korean Maltese?
The term "Korean Maltese" is widely used — but what does it actually mean?
The AKC Does Not Recognize a Separate Breed
It's important to understand that the American Kennel Club (AKC) does not recognize "Korean Maltese" as a distinct or separate breed. A Maltese is a Maltese — one unified breed with a single breed standard regardless of where in the world the dog was born or bred.
The term "Korean Maltese" simply refers to Maltese dogs that originated in South Korea or were produced by Korean breeders. It is a description of lineage, not a separate breed classification.
So Why Are They Different?
Over many years, certain breeders in South Korea — driven by the high demand in Asian markets for adorable, doll-faced companion dogs — selectively bred for specific physical traits. These traits include:
- A compact, rounded body structure
- A distinctively round, dome-shaped head with a high forehead
- A shorter, snubbed nose that appears tipped upward
- Larger, rounder, wide-set eyes that give a sweet, expressive look
When these traits come together, breeders and enthusiasts call it the "babydoll face." It's this look that has made Korean-lineage Maltese so sought after worldwide.
Not All Korean-Bred Maltese Have These Features
This is a critical point. Simply being born in Korea does not guarantee a dog has a babydoll face. The quality of any dog — its physical traits, health, and temperament — is determined by the individual breeder's practices, not the country of origin.
A responsible breeder carefully selects breeding pairs over many generations to consistently produce the desired traits. An irresponsible breeder may label dogs "Korean Maltese" without any genuine commitment to these standards.
⚠️ A Word of Warning
The popularity of "Korean Maltese" and "babydoll face" dogs has unfortunately attracted irresponsible breeders and puppy mills eager to capitalize on the trend. Always do your research. Look for:
- DNA health testing of both parents
- Transparency about the dog's lineage and care
- A breeder who wants to get to know you before placing a puppy
- Healthy, happy parent dogs you can see photos or videos of
- A written health guarantee
