Keeping your baby healthy
Feeding & Nutrition
Our Philosophy
After losing multiple beloved dogs to cancer and kidney failure, I dedicated myself to researching dog nutrition. What I found changed everything about how I feed my dogs — and how I advise my puppy families.
The food you feed your Maltese directly impacts their long-term health. Please take the time to read labels and understand what you are feeding your baby.
Key Guidelines
- ✓Protein 30% or lower
High protein strains the kidneys. Look for foods with protein at or below 30%.
- ✓Fat under 20%
Excess fat can cause pancreatitis in small breeds. Keep fat content under 20%.
- ✓First 6 ingredients matter most
These make up the majority of the food. They should be real, identifiable proteins and whole foods.
- ✓Avoid excessive legumes
Fava beans, garbanzo beans, lentils, and peas in large amounts can cause heart issues.
- ✓No by-products or artificial additives
Avoid artificial preservatives, colors, and flavors at all costs.
⚠️ Chemicals to Avoid
Important FDA note: Dog food companies are NOT required by the FDA to list toxic chemicals if the meat was treated with a preservative chemical BEFORE it reaches the processing plant.
- ✗BHA & BHT
Known cancer-causing preservatives. Avoid any food containing these.
- ✗Ethoxyquin
Causes kidney failure. Originally developed as a rubber preservative — it should never be in pet food.
In Memory of Biggie
Biggie was a beloved member of our family who developed aggressive cancer at just 3 years old. His food contained Ethoxyquin. He was taken from us far too soon. We dedicate this nutrition page to him, hoping it saves other families from the same heartbreak.
